+HOW FLEXIBLE ARE THE HOURS? WHAT IF I HAVE OTHER THINGS GOING ON?
The hours are super flexible. This is not like a regular job where you are given 20 hours a week and have to work particular days. You get to decide when you want to open hours, and parents will book classes with you based on your availability. When I traveled to Chicago for the marathon, I didn’t need to let my boss know that I wouldn’t be able to work. I just didn’t open any hours on my schedule for those days. However, I DID open hours to teach on the Monday after the marathon, and because this is an online job, I was able to teach a few classes from my parents’ kitchen table.
+I LOOKED AT THAT BUT THE AVAILABLE HOURS ARE SO FREAKING WEIRD. WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?
Remember when you were a little kid, and you said you were digging a hole all the way to China? Well, it’s kinda like that. You are teaching kids on the other side of the world, all the way in China, and they are basically a half of a day in the future. WHOA. Soooo, yeah, the hours are a lotta different than a regular tutoring center here in America. But actually, that’s what makes this part-time job so genius. I have a full-time job, well, several jobs, but that’s another story. I am busy working from 10am-7:00pm or sometimes 9:30pm every day of the week. If the hours of this job were regular tutoring center hours like 3pm-8pm, I wouldn’t be able to work it. And I am guessing you are someone with a full-time job as well. Here’s the beauty in teaching kids in China: We can make this job work by CHOOSING to wake up 90 minutes early every day. Listen, I’m not saying it’s pretty waking up 90 minutes earlier than we want to, but when we wanna make that money, we gotta make sacrifices. So if that means going to bed 90 minutes earlier so that you can wake up 90 minutes earlier and make an extra $900 a month or $10,950 a year, doesn’t it seem like a pretty awesome trade-off? An extra $10k for 90 minutes of work each day? Listen, maybe you’re a millionaire, but I am not. I will sacrifice and miss watching This Is Us or Chicago PD and make an extra $10k instead. Thank ya!
+I AM PRETTY SURE THIS IS A SCAM. I SEE FACEBOOK ADS FOR IT ALL THE TIME, SO IT IS PROBABLY A SCAM. IS THIS A SCAM?
Well dear friend, I have money in m’ bank, and so do 20,000+ teaching in America and all over the world. The company is 4 years old, and their marketing department ROCKS. That’s how a business grows. They have to market to attract clients and market to attract teachers. Ever watch Shark Tank? I think it’s pretty cool to see someone take a problem and create a business that provides a solution. Kids in China get to learn English, and teachers in America get to make bank. So… think positively about the world and you will find positive things. Think negatively about the world and you will keep attracting negative things into your life…
+WHAT ARE THE KIDS LIKE?
Generally, I get students from age 5 to age 11. My little kiddos are learning letters, sounds, sight words, and Consonant Vowel Consonant words (CVC words) like c-a-t or d-i-g. Basically all the things I taught American students in kindergarten. The older kids have had English in their school for several years and are usually reading paragraphs and then discussing what they read, learning new vocabulary, and practicing their English. The kids are usually very well-behaved. Their parents are usually sitting next to them to ensure they are working. They ALWAYS say thank you at the end of class. Like always. I’ve never had a student say thank you for teaching them. These kids always say, “Thank you teacher!” And then they smile and wave to make for like 15 seconds while I am trying to close the classroom up. They will draw pictures for you. They will squeal when they see your face show up on camera. It's brought back a joy to teaching for me.
+WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A TEACHING CERTIFICATE?
Do you have a Bachelor’s degree? In anything? Ok, cool. Next question. Have you ever seen a child before? Have you read to a child? Babysat? Do you have a child? Do you have a niece? Nephew? Did you once work at a summer camp? Did you used to teach Sunday school? Listen, there are lots of teacher in the company who do not have a teaching certificate but have had some sort of experience working with kids. The Bachelor’s degree is the big part. If you have that, I will train and mentor you through the process. After you are hired, there are also tons of FREE workshops you can attend to help you become a better teacher!
+SO TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW TO MAKE $1000. HOW LONG DOES THAT TAKE?
Ok, remember when I told you this was not like a regular job where you are just given hours? Yeah, it’s more like a mini-business where you kinda have to wait a bit for people to book classes with you. It takes time, but it does happen if you are putting the time and effort to make your classes spectacular. Once someone takes a class with you, they will have the opportunity to review you. If you were rude, late, boring, didn’t know what the heck was going on, etc, you’re gonna get a crappy review. So don’t do that. Take this job seriously. Okay wait, don’t get all nervous. You’ll be okay. It’s not life and death. Ok, like you are not going to be perfect your first few classes and you will mess up. I did. That’s how we learn. But you gotta take those mess-ups and get better, mmmk? Ok, so as you start to get better, you are super smiley, you’re fun and funny, the kids start to love taking classes with you, parents will start to leave you glowing reviews and give you 5 stars. Then other parents will see your reviews and want their kids to be in your classes. And then you will start booking more classes.
Some teachers are super successful their first month. Not even kidding. I’ve seen some teachers make like $2000 in their first month.
I was not like that.
It always takes me a little bit to catch on to things and be successful. I usually mess up like 17 times before I catch on.. or before I find motivation to push myself to get better…
I made $16 my first month. I had a few trips. I was working like 50+ hour weeks at my other jobs. Oh, and I was training for a marathon.
In my second month, I made $142. Same as above.
In my third month, I got serious. Remember that part about learning from your mistakes? Yeah, that. So this is when I decided to make working in the morning a non-negotiable, on top of getting in my marathon training runs, I was going to make myself wake up early and teach. I started opening up more slots, parents started booking me, and I got better at teaching because I was getting more experience teaching. I started asking parents to leave reviews for me. I think that was a big thing. When I started asking parents to leave feedback, they finally started doing it more. Then this helped get the word out about me, and other parents started booking with me.
I made $921 in my third month.
In my fourth month, I wanted to hit $1000. But I also had a trip to Chicago for the Chicago marathon, I had a trip to Savannah for a girls’ weekend, and I had started a new job. I did what I could. When I went home for the marathon, I decided to work on the Monday. When I went to Savannah, I decided to work on the Monday before my drive home. As the month got close to ending, I pushed hard and opened classes on a Friday night. I was so close.
I made $984 in my fourth month. Ugh, $16 shy of my goal. Nonetheless, I made $63 more than I made the previous month!
Ok, so here is how one can make $1000 in a month.
It has to be a non-negotiable to open slots. If you don’t open slots, no one can book with you. Duh.
So I make it a non-negotiable to work 1.5 hours every day. No matter what. On Wednesdays, I work until 9:30pm. Doesn’t matter. I still teach for 1.5 hours in the morning. On Thursday, I am exhausted from my long Wednesday. Doesn’t matter. I still teach for 1.5 hours in the morning.
What we do every day matters more than what we do every once in a while.
Remember how I only made $142 in my second month? It’s because i didn’t work every day.
Look at this math:
If I teach for 1.5 hours a day, that comes out to $30. No big deal, right? $30 is not a lot of money.
BUT what we do every day matters.
If I make $30 a day every day… including Saturday and Sundays…
$30 x 30 days in a month = $900
Just for working 1.5 hours every day.
Ok, so how are we going to go from $900 to $1000?
By opening up 10 more classes. Some days, I will have to teach 4 classes in a row instead of 3. Not a big deal. An extra 10 classes is an extra $100 and $900 + $100 = $1000.
WOW. Isn’t math so cool?
+I AM A STAY AT HOME PARENT. WHAT IF I WANT TO MAKE MORE THAN $1000 IN A MONTH?
Open more slots to teach. A lot of people make like $3000 or $4000 in a month by, you guessed it, teaching more classes. For me, this is a part-time gig to supplement my income. For a LOT of people, ESPECIALLY STAY AT HOME PARENTS, this is a giant source of income. And it's the best. Working from home? Setting your own schedule? Being your own boss? Like super ideal for a lot of families. Let's talk though: opening more slots to teach also means you have to sacrifice more time in your day in order to teach them. That means saying no thanks to bige watching Netflix so that you can go to bed early and wake up super early to teach. Or that means staying in on a Friday night or Saturday night and staying up to teach from 8pm to 9am. Yes, teaching overnight. No company is just going to hand out money. You have to work for your money. But a lot of teachers are super successful doing overnights and have paid of credit card bills, saved for Christmas, and taken their kids to Disney World. I think my favorite part is hearing their stories. This job is a blessing for a lot of families.
+CAN I WORK AT NIGHT?
Yes, Friday nights and Saturday nights are hopping. Remember, China is half of a day ahead of me. So when it is 8pm Friday night in Atlanta, it is 8am Saturday morning in China, and kiddos are waking up on their weekend and wanting to take class and learn English. (Seriously, these kids are so freaking excited to learn.) And unless the kids are on break from school, no, there are not hours during the week. Think about it! If it is 8pm on a Wednesday night in Atlanta, it is 8am on a Thursday morning in China.
+THESE TIME ZONE SWITCHES SEEM TOUGH. WHAT IF I MESS UP AND GET CONFUSED TRYING TO CALCULATE WHAT TIME I AM SUPPOSED TO TEACH?
The company works with English speaking teachers in countries all over the world. Seriously. A lot of teachers do this job while living abraod. It's pretty cool. Anywho, because of that, the company is really good about taking care of all the time differences. When you schedule a class, it will show up as your time zone so you know exactly when you are teaching. You will not have to worry about it.
